Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to use ourwebsite — regardless of disability, device, or assistive technology. This pageis an honest account of where we are today, what we're actively fixing, and howto reach us if you hit a barrier.
01 Our commitment
BuildNRGY aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA — the internationally recognized standard for web accessibility, published by the W3C. We chose this standard because it reflects our values, not because it is currently required of us by Ontario law.
We review our website regularly, act on accessibility feedback promptly, and treat every reported barrier as a priority.
02 Current status
buildnrgy.com is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA.This means some pages or components do not yet fully meet the standard. The specific gaps we are aware of are listed honestly in Section 04.
Our assessment is based on an internal review conducted in April 2026 using automated tools (axe DevTools, WAVE) and manual keyboard and screenreader testing. We have not yet completed a full third-party audit.
03 What we have built
Structure and navigation
- SemanticHTML elements (<header>, <nav>, <main>, <footer>) areused throughout so screen readers can interpret the page structure
- Headinglevels (H1 to H3) are used in logical, non-skipped order on all pages
- A'Skip to main content' link is available on every page for keyboard users
- All navigation menus are fully operable by keyboard (Tab, Enter, Escape)
Visual design
- All body text meets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against its background
- Interactive elements (buttons, links, form fields) have a visible focus indicator
- Information is never conveyed by colour alone — labels and icons accompany colour distinctions
- The site is fully responsive from 320px (small mobile) to large desktop
- Text can be resized up to 200% in the browser without content overlapping or beingcut off
Images
- All meaningful images have descriptive alt text
- Decorative images have empty alt attributes so screen readers skip them
- Projectgallery images include alt text describing the renovation type and key features
Forms
- All form fields have visible, associated labels
- Required fields are identified visually and programmatically
- Error messages identify the specific field and explain how to fix it
- All forms can be completed by keyboard without a mouse
Language
- Page language is declared in the HTML (lang='en-CA') so screen readers use correct pronunciation
- We write in plain, direct language and avoid jargon where possible
04 Known gaps and what we're doing about them
We believe in being transparent about what isn't working yet.
- Projectgallery keyboard access: Our photo gallery lightbox is not fully keyboard-operable in all browsers. Users who cannot use a mouse may have difficulty viewing full-size project photos. Fix in progress: implementing a keyboard-accessible gallery. Target: Q2 2026.
- PDF documents:Some downloadable documents linked from our site are not fully tagged for screen readers. Fix inprogress: re-exporting all PDFs with proper structure and alt text. Target: Q2 2026.
- Older projectimages: Photos addedbefore 2025 may have generic alt text. Fix in progress: reviewing and rewritingall pre-2025 image alt text. Target: Q3 2026.
- Mobile menu focus: When the mobile navigation closes, focus doesn't always return to the menu button. Fix inprogress. Target: Q2 2026.
05 Assistive technology we test with
- Screen readers: NVDA withChrome on Windows; JAWS with Edge on Windows; Voice Over with Safari on macOS and iOS.
- Voice control: Windows Voice Access; Apple Voice Control.
- Browser zoom: 100%, 150%, and 200% in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
- High contrast: Windows High Contrast Mode; macOS Increase Contrast.
